Registration of Deaths

In case of death of an Indian national in Brazil, the same is required be registered with the Embassy or Consulate at the earliest. Embassy, after cancellation of the passport and carrying out necessary entries in the passport database, shall issue a ‘Death Certificate’ on the basis of death certificate issued by local authorities.

For local cremation/burial of mortal remains

In case of performing the last rites in Brazil, local authorities may require a ‘No Objection Certificate’ issued by the Embassy / Consulate for allowing local burial/cremation of the mortal remains.

In such cases, the family/relative/sponsor or the informant may contact the Embassy for issuance of ‘No Objection Certificate’ with the following documents:-

  • Misc. Consular Service Application form, duly filled-in along with copy of identity document of the informant;
  • Death certificate issued by local authorities – Original and a photocopy;
  • Original passport of the deceased for cancellation by the embassy, if available;
  • Copy of visa/stay permit/local identity card of Brazil, if available;
  • In case of death due to unnatural reason or homicide, copy of post-mortem report, if conducted by local authorities;
  • A letter from the next of kin of the deceased, addressed to the Embassy enclosing copy of identity document, confirming relationship status with the deceased and giving consent for performing last rites of the mortal remains locally.

For transportation of mortal remains to India

In case of transportation of mortal remains to India for performing last rites, local authorities may require a ‘No Objection Certificate’ issued by the Embassy / Consulate for allowing airlifting of the mortal remains.

In such case, in addition to those required for allowing performing last rites locally, the following additional document shall also be required:-

  • Copy of embalming certificate;
  • Copy of certificate regarding sealing of coffin under inspection of competent authorities of Brazil;
  • Copy of certificate confirming that body of the deceased is free from any kind of infection and safe for transportation by air.
  • A letter from the next of kin of the deceased, addressed to the Embassy enclosing copy of identity document, confirming relationship status with the deceased and undertaking full responsibility of performing last rites of mortal remains upon receipt in India.
