The 3rd Special Course for Diplomats from Pacific Island Countries from 20 February - 03 March 2023


The 3rd Special Course for Diplomats from the Pacific Island Countries (PIC) is being held at the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service (SSIFS), Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi from 20 February-03 March 2023. 18 young diplomats from the Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu are participating in the course. The Special Course was inaugurated on 20 February 2023 by Dean (SSIFS), Amb. Sanjiv Ranjan.

The training programme would include modules inter alia on India’s foreign policy, India’s relations with the Pacific Island countries, multilateral diplomacy, negotiation skills, sustainable development issues, climate change, India’s success story in its pandemic response, maritime security, digital empowerment, and sustainable tourism. Sessions on Ayurveda, Yoga, and various facets of Indian culture have also been included. As a part of their study tours in New Delhi, the diplomats would be visiting Rashtrapati Bhavan, Election Commission of India, the National Health Authority (CoWIN App) and National Museum. A day-long visit to the Taj Mahal, Agra, is also planned.

India’s Act-East policy and the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) complement each other. This Special Programme aims to promote further people-to-people ties between India and the PIC as the grouping gets ready to organise the 3rd FIPIC Summit later this year. Prior to this Special Course, 78 diplomats from PIC have trained at SSIFS.
