Prime Minister of India to Launch ‘Digital India Week’ on July 1, 2015

            The Government of India is launching a flagship programme, Digital India, which aims to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. The Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi would launch the Digital India Week on 1 July 2015 in New Delhi to encourage people's involvement in the programme and create awareness about its key aspects. 

2.         The Digital India week would show-case Government of India's initiative in three key vision areas: (a) Digital Infrastructure as a Utility to Every Citizen; (b) Governance & Services on Demand; and (c) Digital Empowerment of Citizens. Digital India would be a cross-cutting programme ranging from broadband connectivity at grassroots level, Wi-Fi in schools and universities and Public Wi-Fi hotspots. It will encourage use of Information Technology (IT) for delivery of public services related to health, education, agriculture, banking, etc.  The programme is expected to generate significant number of jobs, both directly and indirectly, in the IT, telecom and electronics sectors.

3.         The High Commissioner of India, Mr. Rajeev Shahare told media that the Digital India Week would have a positive impact on boosting India's cooperation in IT related areas globally, including Maldives.  Under a bilateral cooperation programme, India had provided assistance worth US$5.2 million for propagating IT Education among youth and educational institutions in Maldives during 2012-13. India looks forward to further strengthening digital cooperation with Maldives, said the High Commisioner.
