ITEC Day Celebration by High Commission of India

The High Commission of India hosted a function at Indian Cultural Centre in Malé on Friday, 27 March to celebrate the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Day. Under its ITEC programme, the India shares its rich experience in the field of economic development, manpower, skills and technology with its 161 partner countries, including Maldives by bilaterally extending training courses in India, deputation of Indian experts abroad, aid for disaster relief, gifting of equipment, study tours and feasibility studies and consultancy services. It is a demand driven programme and apart from regular courses, special courses and training programmes are arranged on specific request of partner countries. ITEC programme, which started in 1964, has completed its 50 years and this year is being observed as its Golden Jubilee year.

Under ITEC, India offers several training slots and scholarships to Maldivian students every year for long-term courses of up to three years as well as short-term courses. This is in addition to scholarships offered to Maldivian students under other schemes like ICCR scholarships, SAARC Chair Fellowship, Technical Cooperation Scheme of Colombo Plan, Medical scholarships and training for MNDF and MPS. India also provides gifting of equipment to Maldivian organizations, and deputation of Indian experts to Maldives and study tours by Maldivian delegations to India.

Many Maldivian guests including the alumni of training courses in Indian attended the ITEC day programme and shared their experiences. Speaking at the occasion, Dr Mohamed Habeeb, Minister of State for health in government of Maldives, expressed appreciation for the ITEC and other scholarship programmes offered by India and hoped for enhanced cooperation between the two countries. High Commissioner of India, Mr. Rajeev Shahare said that Capacity building and skills development were key elements of India’s cooperation with Maldives and India was committed to further strengthen its close partnership with people of Maldives by offering even more number of scholarships and training slots.
