Visit of Dhivehi Language Academy Delegation

A 7-member delegation from the Dhivehi Language Academy led by their President Mr. Ali Ashraf is visiting India from 29 March-9 April 2015 on the invitation of the Government of India.  During their visit, the delegation will hold meetings with leading Indian universities and interact with their experts on ethnic, historical, linguistic and cultural links between India and Maldives since ancient times.  The delegation has indicated their interest in conducting research work, particularly on the impact of Indic and Dravidian languages on Dhivehi and earlier Maldivian languages.

The present visit by the Dhivehi Language Academy is taking place under the rubric of close cooperation in cultural matters between India and Maldives.  The delegation would be visiting academic institutions, museums and historical places in Delhi, Agra, Aligarh, Mysore, Kannur and Thiruvananthapuram.  The delegation would also visit the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) at Mysore.  It was learnt that the delegation is also keen to collect information on famous Maldivian King Mohamed Bodu Thakurufaanu who ruled Maldives from 1573 to 1585 and had reportedly acquired training in statecraft under a contemporary Indian ruler from southern India.

The High Commissioner of India, H.E. Mr. Rajeev Shahare, hosted the members of the delegation at a reception before the visit.
