Speaking to the press on Tuesday regarding the President’s recent official visit to India, the Minister highlighted that “both countries agreed that strengthening state institutions instead of focusing on individuals is the way forward”.
She also revealed that neither Prime Minister Modi nor the Indian External Affairs Minister SushmaSwaraj had mentioned former President Mohamed Nasheed or other “political prisoners” at the discussions held during the President’s official visit.
Furthermore, Minister Dhunya insisted that India had made it abundantly clear that they did not want to meddle with the “internal affairs” of Maldives.
“India understands that rulings issued by the Maldivian judiciary should be respected. Indian officials assured us of their policy of non-interference”, she added.
Apart from this, the Minister reiterated that Maldives has no political prisoners, and that politicians who are currently in prison are behind bars solely based on the crime they committed. |
