India kicked off Sunday a medical camp in Maldives with an unprecedented level of participation from the regional superpower's specialist doctors.

The medical camp, held from Sunday till Tuesday at the state run Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in capital Male is run by a urologist (urinary system specialist), nephrologist (kidney specialist) and a specialist of body defects.

Registration for the free medical camp was opened a week ago.

The camp, taking place at the conference room of the India-donated hospital, is part of a health week organised by the Indian high commission in Male.

As part of the health week, the high commission kick started a four-day health expo in Male on Friday.

This marks the first health expo India is holding in the Maldives, with the participation of 18 hospitals of India, including famous names such as Apollo Hospitals, Ananthapuri Hospitals, Manipal Hospitals, NU Hospitals and Rajan Dental.

In addition to information on services available at the hospitals and expenses, the expo, which would go on till Monday, also offers medical appointments and discount packages to customers.

India is the preferred destination for Maldivians who often travel abroad to receive medical treatment.
