The High Commission of India is hosting next week a health expo featuring some 20 leading multi speciality hospitals and a free medical camp at the state-owned Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital.

The India- Maldives Health and Wellness Week, the first of its kind, will be held at Dharubaaruge from February 13 – 15. Discounted treatment packages and immediate medical appointments will be on offer.

The multi-speciality hospitals involved include Ananthapuri, Kims, Apollo and Manipal hospitals.

India is a top destination for Maldivians for medical care.

The free medical camp at IGMH offers consultations with urologists, nephrologists, and paediatric surgeons.

The Indian hospital delegation will also meet their Maldivian counterparts to identify areas of collaboration.

Last January, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet endorsed External website that opens in a new window a 2014 plan to train health sector professionals in the Maldives and assist in the procurement of essential and generic drugs.

The Indian government is also spending US$10million on renovating IGMH, a 200-bed hospital that was built with Indian assistance and opened in 1995.

India also assisted in setting up the Senahiya military hospital in Malé. A team of Indian Armed force doctors and technical staff were deployed to the Maldives to help run it.

“Cooperation in health Sector has been one of the important elements of India’s relations with Maldives,” the Indian High Commission said at the time.
