H.E. Dr. Irshad Ahmad

Ambassador of India to the Syrian Arab Republic

Dr. Irshad Ahmad joined Ministry of External Affairs in 2001. He started his career as Attaché in West Asia & North Africa (WANA) Division. Later, he served in Indian Missions in Riyadh and Jeddah as Third Secretary/Consul. He came back to Headquarters in 2008 and served as Under Secretary in charge of Kuwait and Bahrain in the Gulf Division of Ministry of External Affairs. He had a second stint at Consulate General of India, Jeddah from 2012 to 2017 where he headed various desks including Press, Information, Culture and Education. He moved back to Headquarters in 2017 and served in RBB and WANA Divisions of the Ministry as Deputy Secretary in charge of Egypt, Jordan, Djibouti, Eritrea and Arab League. In 2019, he moved to Embassy of India, Muscat where he headed substantive portfolios of Labour and Community Affairs as First Secretary/Counsellor before joining Embassy of India, Damascus as Ambassador in October 2023.

Hailing from the city of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh Province, Dr. Irshad Ahmad studied at Jamia Millia Islamia and Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi where he obtained his B.A. (Hons), M.A. and Ph.D in Arabic with distinction. He is well versed in Arabic, Urdu and Hindi Languages. He has a publication in Arabic titled “The Situation of Arabic Language in Indian Universities” published by Indian Council for Cultural Relation (ICCR), New Delhi.

Ambassador Irshad’s interests include Arab history, Arab Culture and Arabic Language and Literature.

Ambassador Irshad is married to Mrs. Akhtar Jahan and they have a son and a daughter.
